ENSO gave us a brutally cold but short early Winter, followed by easy weather for the last couple months. We took last weekend's balmy skies as an opportunity to get E back into the swing of things vis-à-vis Ludwig and his real purpose, as opposed to the 'round town driving he's been doing lately. A trip up to the National Bison Range for a picnic and a little woods-walking seemed reasonable. We brought along SW (E's buddy's mom) and A (E's buddy).
The road took us past the Southern reaches of the Mission Mountains. To me, they're reminiscent of the Tetons, how they rise so abruptly from the valley floor (not as jaggedy or as high though).

We saw antelope, some deer, and some magpies on our short drive through the range. On our way back home around it, we saw some bison.

The short hike around a pond ("Turtles!"), through some trees ("I yelling! I crazy!"), and next to a stream ("Throw rocks!") was a hit. There was also a lot of pep talk--"Do you like riding in Ludwig?" "Would you want to sleep in Ludwig?", ideas to which Tater Tot seemed amenable. For her part, A appeared to like the trip as well. SW, well, maaaaybe. Just kidding; she was a good sport.

Not to be a blog stalker or anything, but these are great pics of the mountains.... these are really inspiring to me, Maizy and I are expecting a child in May, and we have been talking about how to figure out a solution to be able to put a car seat in the bus, and if that's something we should even consider doing. Seeing this makes me think that its actually possible to pull it off. I cant wait to take my kid cruising around in the bus! Thanks Guys.

We can state that it is possible to install at least two car seats in a '74-75 VW bus; I'm not sure about <'74, but >'75 have 3/4 width rear seats and might only accommodate one. Neither of us is a safety expert, but we've been satisfied that the car seat is installed in Ludwig as properly as it would be in a 2008 Honda Accord (for instance). The biggest pain is what to do with the seat when you're actually camping.
On late bays at least there are holes for putting in 3-point seatbelts in the rear (Sweden, I think, required them, so VW just built all of the bodies with the holes), if you are so inclined.
We've had two convertible car seats rear-facing in the back of Gertie as well. That's a small car.
